This workshop we will incorporate and explore works of art\, scholarship\, and artists who contributed to the body and meaning of the continuous rebirth of Puerto Rico’s visual culture. \nDr. Marielba Torres-Muñoz \nShe serves on the Boards of Directors of the Fundación Puertorriqueña para las Humanidades\, (FpH) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico. \nShe is currently a researcher in Programa de Diversidad en Afrodescendencia y Racialidad\, UPR-RP\, sponsored by the Andrew Mellon Foundation (2022). SUMMARY:Ancestral Reckonings: Why Your DNA Results Don't Match the Records
DESCRIPTION:AFRORRIQUEÑES: Affirmation\, Solidarity and Healing \nMay 25-27 2022 at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center \nA multi-day series committed to the continuous dialogue on Afrodescendencia produced by Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center \n  \n“Ancestral Reckonings: Why your DNA results don’t match the records” \nConversation and workshop with Melanie Maldonado Diaz\, scholar\, genealogist\, and cultural organizer. \nThis workshop demystifies the racial triad (Spanish-African-Taino) proposed by colonial narratives and shows how record keepers were complicit in erasing Blackness from archival records in Puerto Rico. \nMelanie Maldonado Díaz \nMelanie developed the Lugares Históricos project\, which highlights Black history sites in Puerto Rico. In 2018\, she led a first-of-its-kind community tour of these ancestral spaces for African diasporic gathering and traditional practices and in 2019 began placing historical markers at these locations. \nMelanie is committed to creating access\, building commUnity\, and helping families re-member the legacies of their ancestors. Her bomba research explicates women’s agency\, the importance of textiles\, genealogy\, lineages of learning\, songs as critical records\, placemaking\, and historic spaces of praxis. \n  \nPOSTER ART “PAZ PARA LAS MUJERES” BY COLECTIVO MORIVIV´I.

SUMMARY:Somos La Plena
DESCRIPTION:A Chicago celebration of the life and legacy of Tito Matos\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOn January 18\, 2022 the Puerto Rican cultural community was shocked by the news of the sudden departure of musical giant Tito Matos. After an extensive career as a master percussionist\, teacher and bandleader of Viento de Agua and La Máquina Insular\, Tito left a strong legacy of community work and cultural preservation in Puerto Rico and abroad. \nHis time living in New York\, as well as his relationship with Chicago’s musicians and cultural institutions allowed him to deepen his roots in the diaspora. He was a teacher\, mentor and friend for hundreds of plena practitioners across the globe. \nSRBCC is proud to partner with Tito’s closest friends from Puerto Rico and Chicago\, including Lagarto Figueroa\, Llonsi Martínez\, Ricardo Pons\, Noel Rosado\, Emanuel Santana (Puerto Rico)\, Ivelisse Díaz (La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón)\, Bomba con Buya \, Las Bompleneras and Los Pleneros de Don Segundo (Chicago) to celebrate his enduring legacy\, raise funds for La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos\, and establish a new scholarship for Chicago’s creative youth in his honor. \nJoin us in this Chicago celebration of the Life and Legacy of Héctor “Tito” Matos.
