SUMMARY:SAI Screenings: Before You Were My Mother
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute Presents\, \nA special screening of the Nepali documentary “Before You Were My Mother” as part of our new “SAI Screenings” series on Saturday\, April 6 (3:30 pm). \nAbout the film\nBorn and brought up in Manipur and currently living in New York\, Ibemhal (59) left her childhood home in Manipur and moved to Nepal after her marriage. Ibemhal’s whole life has been dedicated to raising her two daughters while trying to find her own identity in new places. Who is Ibemhal beyond her identity as a mother and a wife? What was her life like in Manipur? \nPrasuna (30)\, Ibemhal’s eldest daughter longs to understand the person that is her mother. Prasuna’s bond with her mother is shaped by the conflict-ridden socio-political environment in which she was raised\, patriarchal expectations of being a woman in a Nepali society and years of living apart. When Ibemhal returns to Nepal to visit Prasuna in 2020\, both of them take a trip to Manipur to visit Ibemhal’s mother\, Prasuna’s grand mother. \nThis 73 minutes deeply personal observational documentary explores the relationship between mothers and daughters and unearths layers of their childhood\, youth and past traumas. Prasuna tries to come to terms with the differences she has with her mother and seeks a way to define her own life. \nAbout the director \nPrasuna is a documentary filmmaker from Kathmandu. She works as a DocLab Coordinator at kimff and is one of the Filmmaker Mentors for the Camera Sika project run by The British Council Nepal. She was also one of the Filmmaker Fellows of One World Media’s Global Short Doc Forum 2021. Her documentary ‘Dolpa Diary’ (2019) was screened at many film festivals in and outside of Nepal. The documentary was awarded in the category of Best Adventure Film at kimff 2018 and Best Woman Filmmaker at Human Rights International Film Festival (HRIFF) 2019. Prasuna’s work broadly concerns collective memory and an in-depth account of personal experiences.

SUMMARY:Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community
DESCRIPTION:In South Asian communities\, mental health issues are often swept under the rug. Because it is culturally stigmatizing to talk about one’s feelings\, some people are denied or have no access to mental health resources. \nNumerous studies have shown that South Asian immigrants experience high rates of mental health problems\, sometimes higher than their peers and the lack of access has serious consequences. \nIn an effort to break the taboo and start a healthy conversation about mental health among South Asian communities\, South Asia Institute has organized “Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community” on Saturday\, March 2\, 2024. \nJoin us for this insightful event led by Rohit Agrawal\, PsyD of Center Focused Therapy\, where we will highlight the intersections of culture and well-being\, and also address the stigma of mental health in South Asian families. \nCommunity-based and personal resources will be provided to participants so that more members of the South Asian community can benefit. \nEvent Details: \nFREE WITH RSVP \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 2\, 2024 | 3:00 pm start / 2:30 pm doors \nWHERE: 1925 South Michigan Ave\, Chicago\, Il\, 60616

SUMMARY:SAI Screenings: 'Indus Blues' (2019) by Jawad Sharif
DESCRIPTION:South Asian filmmakers like Satyajit Ray\, Deepa Mehta\, Mrinal Sen\, Mira Nair\, and Ritwik Ghatak have made significant contributions to the development of cinema using the medium to tell authentic stories of South Asian communities and their relationship to various socio-political issues. However\, their contributions have always been overshadowed by the media hype surrounding Bollywood films. \nTo showcase the diversity of South Asian films\, South Asia Institute is launching “SAI Screening”\, a bi-monthly film screening series highlighting feature films and documentaries by South Asian filmmakers whose talents transcend cultures and boundaries. Their films are not only unique but also reflect different facets of South Asian culture and society. \nFor our first event\, we are screening “Indus Blues” (2019)\, an award-winning documentary directed and produced by Jawad Sharif. The film explores the dying folk and classical musical culture of Pakistan and the challenges faced by the musicians to sustain the craft. \nJoin us for the screening of this thought-provoking film\, followed by a discussion with the director. \nEvent Details \nTicket Price: $5 \nDate: Saturday\, February 10\, 2023 \nTime: 3:30 pm \nVenue: 1925 South Michigan Ave\, Chicago\, IL (South Asia Institute) \nAbout the film \nShot in over 15 locations across Pakistan\, Indus Blues is a musical feature documentary highlighting the plight of the folk musicians and craftsmen of Pakistan and the state of their dying art. \nThe diverse cultures around Indus\, with over 70 spoken languages\, have deep roots going back centuries. Despite the richness of the various cultures flourishing along the mighty Indus river\, their sounds have faded to the background in a world dominated by modern musical instruments. Filmmaker Jawad Sharif takes us on a journey spanning a thousand miles from the Karakoram Mountains to the southern coastline\, capturing the little-known ethnic\, linguistic\, and musical diversity and humanism of the cultures of the Indus. \nAbout the filmmaker \nJawad Sharif is an award-winning filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer based in Pakistan. Exploring the themes of social change and human rights\, his projects focus on reviving the suppressed cultural and indigenous identities of Pakistan. In the past 15 years\, Jawad has pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling by documenting stories about the rights of folk musicians\, high-altitude porters\, climate migrants\, and marginalized communities.

SUMMARY:The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute is pleased to announce its new exhibition\, “The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\,” in collaboration with the Paglees. \nThe Paglees is a feminist collective of artists of South Asian origin living across the United States. Paglee or pagli means crazy woman in a number of South Asian languages. The Paglees are: Fawzia Khan\, Indrani Nayar-Gall\, Monica Jahan Bose\, Nirmal Raja\, Pallavi Sharma\, Renluka Maharaj\, and Shelly Bahl. \nIn their debut exhibition\, The Paglees investigate – with fierceness\, beauty\, and wit – the impact on women of generations of patriarchy\, religion\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, violence\, capitalism\, and environmental plunder. \nThe title of the exhibition derives from Rosa Parks’ words: “There is just so much hurt\, disappointment and oppression one can take. The bubble of life grows larger. The line between reason and madness grows thinner.” (Rosa Parks: Writings\, Notes and Statements\,1956-58). \nFeaturing mixed-media works on paper\, fabric\, and canvas\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, installation\, and moving image\, The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\, questions and reframes the labeling of non-conforming women as crazy and the marginalization of immigrant women of color. This collective exhibition presents new decolonial narratives that center the reason and wisdom of brown women of the Global South and diaspora\, and provide pathways to a creative feminist future. The Paglees believe in working in collaboration with other marginalized communities to build bridges and demand social\, environmental\, and legal justice for all. \nTHE PAGLEES\nFawzia Khan | Indrani Nayar-Gall | Monica Jahan Bose | Nirmal Raja | Pallavi Sharma | Renluka Maharaj | Shelly Bahl
