SUMMARY:Pop-up Café & Semla Pick up
DESCRIPTION:Semlor (Lenten buns) were originally consumed on fettisdagen\, or Fat Tuesday\, as a celebration before the Christian fasting period of Lent. In modern Sweden\, since strict adherence to Lent has waned\, semlor make their appearance in bakeries from about January through Easter. However\, Semla Day (semmeldagen) is still celebrated on Fat Tuesday every year. King Adolf Frederick died in 1771 after eating 14 servings of semlor. So while indulgence is encouraged on fettisdagen\, it might be best to keep your semla intake to fewer than 10! \nThis year you can preorder yours at the Swedish American Museum. Cost per semla is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Last order is taken Sunday\, Feb. 19\, 6 p.m. Any purchase of more than 4 semlor has to be pre-ordered. We ask you to limit your order to 6 semlor since we get a lot of orders.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Tilling the Past
DESCRIPTION:Admission to the special exhibit is free on Sunday\, Feb. 26\, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nTilling the Past\nPhotography by Hilma Ljung\nBetween the years 1908 and the mid 1930’s armed with her 4×5 glass plate view camera\, Hilma Ljung photographed the lives and land that surrounded her and her family in the small village of Svalöv. In an era where photography was largely presided over by men\, Ljung shows us a mostly unseen perspective of rural Swedish life from the female’s point of view. Let us walk out of the darkroom and into the light to view Ljung’s pioneering photographs. \nThe land around Svalöv\, located in the southernmost region of Sweden\, is home to some of the country’s best soil and climate for farming; so much so that the Coat of Arms for the region is a farmer sowing seed. Wheat\, rye\, barley\, potatoes\, oat and flax were all grown for market\, with a vegetable garden\, and chickens\, for household use. A renowned dairy was eventually established on the property. Whey\, a by-product to the butter and milk production\, became feed for pig breeding\, an activity which won Hilma’s family considerable acclaim; the King himself once descending upon Svalöv to admire the breeding “sires and sow’s.” \nLjung’s photographs parallel famed Swedish painter Carl Larsson in that her love and passion for her family and home\, flow through her images with the same authentic pulse. Like Larsson who painted images of everyday activities\, Ljung also chronicled everyday life with a deep and genuine passion. She reveals her family’s favorite location to pick berries. She takes us to a lake where one of her sons is fishing. Her image of a beautiful sunny winter day creates a yearning for a fireplace and tea. \nPrior to 1903 when the invention of what we know today as film (gelatin silver negative)\, photographic emulsion was made on glass plates. There were two formats. The wet plate collodion\, discovered in 1851 by British inventor Frederick Scott Archer\, and the gelatin dry plate negative discovered in 1871 by Richard Leach Maddox. Both of these glass plate formats have a light sensitive emulsion that is attached to the glass plate with a binder. One of the main reasons glass plate negatives mostly disappeared from the consumer market was because of the introduction of the much more user friendly\, less fragile gelatin silver negative on celluloid roll film. Hilma photographed with gelatin dry plate glass negatives. \nThere is a beautiful and authentic simplicity attached to this story. A loving mother\, a devoted wife\, chronicling the life that surrounded her. People are drawn to the past. Ljung’s images are windows revealing a life that was\, tilling the past of people’s lives. \nLike summiting a mountain\, Hilma has given us a new vantage point. One that helps us viewers see the history of photography through an exciting and unfamiliar lens. Thank you\, Hilma\, for sharing with us your perspective of the world you lived in.

SUMMARY:Dinner and a Movie
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Feb. 2\, 5 p.m. dinner and 5:30 p.m. movie \nWe have the great opportunity to be able to show “Historjà – Stitches for Sápmi” at the Museum. The movie has won numerous awards in Sweden. Britta Marakatt-Labba is part in “Arctic Highways” on display in the main gallery. It is in Swedish and Sami with English subtitles. \nAbout Historja:\nBefore being the title of Thomas Jackson’s documentary\, Historjá is the name that Swedish artist Britta Marakatt-Labba gave to her 24-meter-long tapestry in which she describes the fights of the Sámi culture\, to which she belongs\, for the acknowledgment of their identity and history. Leitmotifs\, images\, reminiscences and values of a native people who was settled in the northern part of Fennoscandia – along the borders between Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Russia – are at the core of one of the world’s leading Swedish artists\, who works almost exclusively with needle and thread\, as well as of the film dedicated to her. The director follows her work and thought regarding major contemporary issues\, in the first place climate change and the fight for the right of ethnic minorities. And\, while Britta Marakatt-Labba prepares an important exhibition in Germany (Documenta 14\, Kassel) and invites the audience to get closer to the material and ideal universe of her productions\, in the faraway land of the Sámi (which its inhabitants call Sapmí) her son carries on the century-old tradition of pastoral farming immersed in a universe suspended between past and present\, utopia and reality. \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15518656/  \nCost for dinner and movie is $25 for members and $20 for non-members. Movie only is $10 for all. Prepaid reservations are required for the dinner with no refunds available for cancellations within 5 days of event. Last day to reserve dinner tickets is Wednesday\, Feb. 1.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Arctic Highways
DESCRIPTION:After some delays we are excited to finally open “Arctic Highways.”\nAdmission to see the exhibit is free between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. \nThis exhibit discusses the exploitation of Indigenous land and how imposed borders of nation-states have erased the natural land borders used by Indigenous peoples. Nine Sami artists and three Indigenous artists from Canada and the United States want to use this exhibit to start a dialogue\, raise questions\, and establish waypoints between their culture and ours. This exhibit takes us on a journey through an Arctic highway of culture and life\, stretching from the past into the future.
