SUMMARY:Author Talk: Dr. Don Grossnickle - My Maja: A Grandson's Tribute
DESCRIPTION:My Maja\, A Swedish-American Proud Grandson’s Tribute by Chicago’s Dr. Don Grossnickle \nMaja\, a young roaring twenties Swedish adventurer set sail on a luxury steamship to New York and on to Chicago in 1922 for a visit to relatives. Maja fell in love and spent the rest of her life pursuing the American Dream. Adversity challenges were extreme for a widowed single mother of three balancing long hours as a night nurse and running a boarding house. Ups and downs while being alone in a hostile struggling America during the Great Depression almost killed her. Maja claimed her Swedish upbringing\, character and faith carried the day. History has not taken note of the great guts\, gumption\, perseverance\, determination of Swedish women immigrants. The book\, My Maja\,-is meant to awaken history and to keep Maja’s\, “framåtanda” fully alive forever. \nCome and chat with Don Grossnickle about the Swedish-American Spirit living in each of us today. To register for this event you an email museum@samac.org or call 773.728.8111. Fika (coffee and treats) will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Online Curator Talk: Tova Brandt
DESCRIPTION:New Nordic Cuisine is currently on display at the Swedish American Museum. In this virtual talk we get to meet with Tova Brandt who is the Executive Director of the Museum of Danish America in Iowa. The Museum of Danish American curated the exhibit. \nAbout the exhibit:\nThe cooking traditions and innovations of the Nordic region have captured the attention of the world and inspired chefs and home cooks alike.  In 2004 the Nordic Food Manifesto articulated a set of values for approaching food through the lenses of local production\, seasonality\, tradition\, and innovation\, among others.  The manifesto and reactions to it have sparked a robust dialog about food culture\, both in the Nordic countries and around the world.

SUMMARY:Swedish American Museum Book Club Online
DESCRIPTION:The Museum book club reads a wide range of books from the Nordic countries.\nThis is a free event and you can register by emailing museum@samac.org. \nHere are the upcoming book club books:\nFebruary\nAntiphony by Laila Stien\nMarch\nPakkis by Khalid Hussain \nThe books can be bought in the Museum Store. \nAbout Antiphony\nThe narrator\, a young social scientist who works for a newspaper in Oslo\, goes to Northern Norway on leave after a colleague tells her she lacks initiative. On the surface she is supposed to write a book about structural relationships among the Sami (formerly Lapps). However\, loneliness\, in spite of a good social life with her friends in Oslo\, a tense relationship with her own family\, and a feeling of stagnation in her career seem to be the main reasons for her going away. \nShe becomes acquainted with three generations of Sami women\, hears their stories and attempts to make sense of them. Soon she loses her role as impartial observer and becomes more involved in their lives. The more she discovers\, the less she feels she understands. \nThe novel presents a wonderful picture of Sami culture in transition and in the face of inevitable outside forces. In this sense it is a much more universal work demonstrating how an indigenous culture reacts to a dominant culture and what happens over the course of a relatively short period. The novel is also an anti- or non-ethnography in a sense\, blurring the lines between the center/periphery (narrator/Sami women). \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83441966464

SUMMARY:Genealogy Session Online
DESCRIPTION:Swedish Settlements on the South Shore\nBy Kenneth Schoon \nImmigrants from Sweden were the first non-English speaking people to move into the Indiana Dunes region and establish settlements.  Their legacy can be seen today. \nThis program\, and its accompanying book\, note that these Swedes established more than a dozen local churches\, most of which are still active today.  They built homes out of logs\, lumber\, and bricks\, cleared and farmed the land\, worked for the railroads and the brick factories\, and established businesses\, some of which are still in business today.  Several of the early Swedes served in the Union army in the Civil War.  Nearly all got American citizenship\, and some were elected to political office. \nThe fourth of July was widely celebrated\, but so were Swedish traditions at Midsummer and the Christmas season.   Today descendants of Swedes still learn Swedish songs and dances and celebrate the traditions of their forbears.  Even non-Swedes know about Vikings and may eat Swedish meatballs.  Smörgåsbord has become an American word—though to Swedes it has slightly different meaning.  Swedes and their descendants have helped build the Calumet Area. \nKenneth Schoon is the author of “Swedish Settlements on the South Shore of Lake Michigan.” Although not a Swede\, he is married to the granddaughter of Swedish immigrants. His earlier works include Calumet Beginnings\, Dreams of Duneland\, and Shifting Sands\, all published by Indiana University Press\, and City Trees published by Stackpole Books. \nCost is free for Swedish American Museum Genealogical Society members; $10 for non-members to participate. Member reservations appreciated and can be made via email to genealogy@samac.org or by calling the Museum at 773.728.8111 and non-members can use the button below.

SUMMARY:Movie Screening ONLINE: Älven min Vän
DESCRIPTION:Älven min Vän is a portrait of the lives of four Sami women and their relationship to the Lule River in Sweden. The film shows the consequences of the forced resettlement of Sami people who were displaced from their land because of the construction of river dams and were alienated from their indigenous culture and way of life (such as reindeer husbandry\, clothing\, language\, food and music). At the same time\, the film shows the deep relationship between the women and the river. \nRegister for this free event and receive a link to the movie. You then join the Zoom event to meet the director Hannah Ambühl. To register please email museum@samac.org

SUMMARY:Swedish American Museum Book Club w/ Author Helen Lundström Erwin
DESCRIPTION:Book Club Online\n\nJanuary 29 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm\n\n\n\nThe Museum book club reads a wide range of books from the Nordic countries.\nThis is a free event and you can register by emailing museum@samac.org. \nFor the January event the author\, Helen Lundström Erwin will join us for book club!! \nHere are the upcoming book club books:\nJanuary\nSour milk in sheep’s wool by Helen Lundström Erwin\nFebruary\nAntiphony by Laila Stien\nMarch\nPakkis by Khalid Hussain \nThe books can be bought in the Museum Store. \nAbout Sour milk in sheep’s wool\nSweden\, at the turn of the 20th century. Two women\, an unwed mother and a suffragette\, living lives so different from each other it’s as if they were separated by time\, not just circumstance. They don’t know it\, but destiny is pulling them toward each other and their fates are interlinked. \nAnette spins lies to hide that she’s an unwed mother with many children. And with different fathers for most of them\, a staggering truth she can barely admit even to herself. Without the ability to protect herself from unwanted pregnancies\, she moves each time she gets pregnant\, telling the same tale as always\, she’s a widow. \nHanna closes her café for the night and opens the door to her activist friends\, creating a space safe from curious husbands and disapproving eyes. Inspired by the pioneer temperance woman Emelie Rathou\, who linked alcohol abuse with the oppression of women\, they join forces with the rest of the nation and the world and begin the long fight for Women’s Suffrage. \nHelen Lundström Erwin\, author of the acclaimed James’ Journey\, has created a well-researched\, and riveting second historical novel. By introducing revolutionary women like Elise Ottesen-Jensen\, the co-founder of International Planned Parenthood Federation\, you’ll be transported back in time\, joining our foremothers while they fight for reproductive justice and the right to vote. \n\nMore info and Zoom event ID at: https://swedishamericanmuseum.org/event/book-club-online-19/

SUMMARY:Online Curator Talk - Cori Sherman North
DESCRIPTION:Cori Sherman North\, Curator of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg\, KS will talk about the traveling exhibit “Art for All” that opens today in the Main Gallery. \n“Art for All” features paintings\, drawings\, and prints by prominent Swedish-American artists working in the late 19th and early 20th century held in the collections of the Sandzén Gallery and the Hillstrom Museum of Art. Many Swedish artists who came to America brought with them a newly instilled democratic attitude toward art\, codified in the motto “art for all” and promulgated by Konstnärsförbundet (Artists’ League) that was formed in 1886 in Stockholm\, which sprung from a desire to modernize the Swedish Royal Academy and its attitudes. \nFriday\, Jan 14\, 6pm-7pm. \n  \nLearn more: https://swedishamericanmuseum.org/event/art-talk/
