SUMMARY:Puerto Rican Archives: Preserving Community Memory Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Puerto Rican Archives: Preserving Community Memory is a two-day symposium focused on the political potency of Puerto Rican archives—both on the island and in the diaspora. \nThe symposium is a collaboration between Digitizing the Barrio (an archival project of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center)\, The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. It extends the focus on collective histories highlighted through photographs and ephemera documenting social movements and community organizations in the MCA exhibition entre horizontes: Art and Activism Between Chicago and Puerto Rico. \nThe symposium will foreground archives that house histories of Puerto Rican protest including speakers from presenting Chicago institutions\, PRCC and NMPRAC; representatives from Puerto Rico-based organizations Archivo General de Puerto Rico\, Archivo Histórico de Vieques\, Archivo Comunitario LGBTQ+ de Puerto Rico\, and Memoria Decolonial; and CENTRO in New York. \nThrough panels\, a keynote\, and workshops\, the symposium aims to generate dialogue\, connection\, and community engaged learning around key Puerto Rico and diasporic events. \nThe symposium will take place on April 5 and 6\, 2024\, at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture\, 3015 W Division St\, Chicago\, IL 60622. \n*You must register for each day.

SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

SUMMARY:10th Annual Raices Gala
DESCRIPTION:Can you believe it? \n\n\nIt’s been a decade of celebrating Puerto Rican arts and culture at the Raices Gala! Each year we bring together corporate\, civic\, and philanthropic leaders from the Puerto Rican community and beyond. And each year\, we honor individuals and organizations who have exemplified a commitment to preserving our cultural heritage. Since we commenced\, the National Ceiba Award has been presented in person to Gilberto Santa Rosa\, Lin Manuel Miranda\, Antonio Martorell\, Rita Moreno\, Andy Montañez\, Jon Seda\, David Begnaud\, Quira Alegria Hudes\, Jimmy Smits\, Esmeralda Santiago\, Jose Feliciano\, Lucecita Benitez\, Luis and Luz Miranda\, El Museo de Arte de Ponce\, among others important figures. \nThe National Ceiba Award recognizes those who are deeply committed to preserving and promoting the Puerto Rican arts\, culture\, and traditions at the National and International level. \nFor the 10th Anniversary Raices Gala\, we’ll spend the evening together celebrating our great Puerto Rican culture by immersing all your senses in the food\, sounds\, rhythm\, and exciting performances (along with a few surprises!) at Galleria Marchetti. \nWith a commitment to increase exposure\, this past year\, we have brought the Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra for a first-ever performance in Chicago at Symphony Center; we opened “Nostalgia for my Island: Puerto Rican Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce (1786-1962)\,” a historical exhibit featuring Puerto Rican art rarely displayed in the United States; and we launched our first membership program. \nPlease join us for this special evening celebrating the 10th Anniversary Raices Gala!

SUMMARY:Youth Painting Workshop (ages 12-17)
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to offer a youth painting workshop for only $10\, thanks to the generous donations of visitors who help keep our Museum free and programming affordable to all. \nVanessa Sandoval is a contemporary artist and business owner of Namart Designs (website link). She was born and raised in Chicago and is an active artisan during our Barrio Arts Festival and NaviArts. Her primary focus is paying homage to her Puerto Rican roots by painting cultural and meditative art pieces. Vanessa has taught art classes throughout the City of Chicago and beyond. \nIn this painting workshop\, 20 youth/teens (12-17) will learn about Vanessa’s passion for art and how she started her artisan business. She will spend most of her time teaching them how to use acrylic paints to make one-of-a-kind wooden coasters like the ones she sells on her website and during artisan fairs. We know students will leave inspired to create and\, maybe\, become small business owners! \nAGENDA \n10:00 AM – Parents/Guardians check-in and sign participant waiver (Parents/Guardians are welcome to stay\, tour the museum\, and have some coffee & treats) \n10:30 AM – Welcome and Introductions \n10:45 AM – Begin Project \n12:30 AM – Painting Workshop Ends (Participants must be picked-up by 12:30 pm) \nPlease email: info@nmprac.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Bomba Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to collaborate with AfriCaribe in hosting a free Bomba Workshop. \nBomba is an essential expression of Puerto Rican Culture; it’s not just something you listen to\, you feel it! Come learn the history\, participate in the movements and experience Bomba at another level. \nBomba was brought to Puerto Rico by enslaved ancestors hundreds of years ago\, most of the Island’s cultural expressions evolve from it. The music can be an upbeat holandé\, which is played and danced with great enthusiasm or a yubá\, which is more somber and spiritual. It was the enslaved Africans’ method of expressing themselves and\, although it originated in Puerto Rico\, it echoes across the Caribbean. The songs\, many of which are still sung today\, showcased the lamento among the sugarcane plantation workers\, who bared their collective souls during gatherings. \nAfriCaribe was created in 2000 by Evaristo “Tito” Rodriguez to provide Chicago with a means to celebrate the African influence in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean lands. \nThis is a family friendly event. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Nostalgia for My Island
DESCRIPTION:Nostalgia for My Island: Puerto Rican Paintings from the Museo de Arte de Ponce. \nThe National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture is excited to partner with the world-renowned fine arts museum\, The Museo de Arte de Ponce (El Museo)\, to present a unique exhibit of Puerto Rican paintings on the U.S. mainland. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition\, entitled “Nostalgia for My Island: Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce 1786-1809.” The curated collection of twenty paintings includes original works by prominent Puerto Rican artists Jose Campeche (1751-1809) and Francisco Oller (1833-1917). The paintings in this exhibit have never before traveled outside Puerto Rico. \nJose Campeche\, the son of a slave\, is described by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art as “the most significant Puerto Rican painter of portraits and religious imagery.” Francisco Oller has been called “a Realist-Impressionist” and is considered the only Latin American painter to play a role in the development of Impressionism. In the early 1980s\, El Museo located and restored many of his works\, which had deteriorated in the tropical climate. The exhibit will coincide with the five-year commemoration of Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico and The Museo de Arte de Ponce on September 20\, 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
