SUMMARY:ART WORKS Projects Gallery Closing Event: 18 Years of Visual Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:After 11 years of producing and presenting high-impact visual advocacy projects in our beloved shared office and gallery space located at 625 N Kingsbury Street\, our team at AWP will be moving out on March 31. \n\nTo mark this occasion\, we welcome back AWP’s founder\, Leslie Thomas\, who will be joining us for a special closing event featuring a conversation with managing director Bora Un on Sunday\, March 23 from 3:00 – 5:00pm. This conversation will be moderated by AWP Board Member and DEI Manager at WBEZ\, Steve Bynum.\n\nDuring our time together\, we will revisit some of AWP’s projects from across our 18 years of creating impact through powerful visual storytelling\, and will share details about some upcoming collaborations with Leslie’s film production studio\, MIRA Studios/MIRA Europe. Guests will also have the opportunity to view a glimpse of Leslie’s latest feature-length documentary film\, The Sharp Edge of Peace\, based on AWP’s 2012 project Women Between Peace and War: Afghanistan.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will serve as the closing event for our open house taking place on Saturday\, March 22 – Sunday\, March 23 from 12:00 – 6pm each day as we invite our Chicago community to come see the space for a final time\, and to help us find new homes for a number of our ready-to-go exhibition kits\, books\, limited edition prints\, and a range of unused exhibition materials and supplies that will be for sale\, or free for the taking!

DESCRIPTION:ART WORKS Projects is delighted to invite you to a special celebration as we prepare for the 10th anniversary of the Emerging Lens Fellowship Program in 2025. To commemorate this milestone\, we are hosting an evening of wine tasting and an exhibition that celebrates a decade of transformative storytelling through photography and visual art. \nThe event will feature the work of 2023-24 Fellows Astrig Agopian and Natalia Favre\, whose projects illuminate the enduring connection between land\, identity\, and resilience. The concept of terroir finds unique resonance in their work\, where natural elements like soil and climate shape and preserve cultural heritage. In terroir studies\, soil is not merely a physical medium but a vessel for memory\, carrying layers of meaning that reflect the past and inform the present. This connection becomes the foundation of both artists’ narratives\, as their projects remind us that land is more than terrain—it is a living repository of memory and cultural identity. \nIn Like There’s No Tomorrow\, Astrig Agopian explores how soil and landscape serve as anchors of cultural identity for displaced Armenians\, using land to preserve memory and foster resilience. Similarly\, Maloneras\, Seeds of Resistance by Natalia Favre sheds light on the struggle of Indigenous women in northern Argentina to protect their ancestral land from the environmental and social consequences of lithium mining. Both projects demonstrate how land\, like terroir in winemaking\, shapes unique and enduring narratives\, becoming symbols of resistance\, identity\, and heritage. \nJoin us for this memorable celebration where we will explore the powerful stories behind these works while enjoying a curated wine tasting experience that embodies the rich symbolism of land and place. SUMMARY:From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is one of the most politicized issues in the United States\, as politicians across both aisles debate the fate of people fleeing violence\, poverty\, trafficking\, hunger\, and [political instability. ART WORKS Projects presents From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines\, a discussion between photographers Will Sands\, Oscar Castillo (BordersCruzadas project] and Cathy Edelman\, from Illinois based nonprofit CASE Art Fund [Borderlines exhibition]\, presenting two sides of a very complex issue facing the US Southern border. \nBordersCruzadas: A Collaborative Story recognizes that people impacted by displacement are often excluded from the conversations that determine their fate. Through documentary photography and content collaboratively created with four people fleeing their homeland\, BordersCruzadas explores the physical and symbolic boundaries that define the lived experience of those seeking to cross the United States’ southern border. \nBorderlines is CASE Art Fund’s ongoing photographic exhibition about the Juarez/Texas/New Mexico border. At Expo Chicago\, CASE will recreate the Sunland Park\, NM desert\, the site of the most recent cros­­sings in the El Paso region. The exhibition includes photographs of the terrain\, objects found in the desert\, photographs and videos of helicopters and border patrol searching the desert\, and a poignant interview from a local proprietor whose business is the site of most desert crossings today and in 2022. \nFrom BordersCruzadas to Borderlines will be held in person at ART WORKS Projects\, 625 N Kingsbury St\, Chicago\, on Wednesday\, April 12. \nDoors open at 5 pm to for an early preview of an exhibition in development\, BordersCruzadas. \nThe presentation and discussion will be from 6:00 – 7:15 pm.

Castillo and Wil Sands\, which compiles documentary photography\, video\, archival materials\, and personal and political discourse to present the physical and symbolic boundaries that form America’s borders. The resulting images and documents not only provide tangibility to an abstract space but offer those within it visibility and voice.  \nBoth veteran photojournalists\, Castillo and Sands spent months documenting and collaborating with migrants in Mexico and at the US border. BorderCruzadas is the result of shared efforts to present a visual\, evidentiary case for urgent\, effective\, and coordinated public policy and humanitarian aid for the globally displaced.

DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THIS EVENT: \nJoin the co-editors of Witnesses to War: The Children of Syria\, Karam Foundation\, ART WORKS Projects\, and event sponsor\, Howard Conant\, Jr.\, for a discussion and exhibition of acclaimed photojournalist Bassam Khabieh’s nearly decade long project\, Witnesses to War: The Children of Syria. \nKhabieh (joining via live feed) and Lina Sergie Attar\, CEO and Founder of the Karam Foundation\, will be in conversation to discuss Khabieh’s unique and personal perspective\, the impact of the ongoing war in Syria on children\, and the ongoing challenges facing the 3.6 million registered Syrian refugees currently living in Turkey as well as those living in other parts of the globe. \nGlobally\, we have surpassed 100 million refugees worldwide\, most recently due to the war in Ukraine. While attention has been shifted to supporting Ukrainian refugees\, we welcome this opportunity to connect with our Chicago-land community members to draw lessons learned from different contexts and treatments of refugees\, and how we can take action. \nABOUT WITNESSES TO WAR: THE CHILDREN OF SYRIA \nWitnesses to War: The Children of Syria – book and exhibition – provides an insider’s account of the impact that the war in Syria has had on children. \nFrom the rebel held area of Eastern Ghouta\, Witnesses to War illustrates\, through photographs and stories\, the incredible resilience of Syria’s young in the face of violence. Children and their families held onto fragments of normalcy through schools conducted in basements\, street games played in the temporary lull of battle\, and events and holidays celebrated under tenuous conditions. \nKhabieh did not start out as a photographer. When the war broke out in Syria\, he was studying computer science at Damascus University. As the violence escalated there and around the country\, it was clear that there was an urgent need for Syrian photographers to ensure that the world knew what was happening in his increasingly isolated and dangerous homeland. Throughout the conflict—until mid-2018\, when the Syrian regime captured Douma\, his hometown—he remained in the region\, working as a photojournalist for many international media outlets and gaining international acclaim. \nIn this 11th anniversary year of the Syrian Arab Spring\, Syria remains in crisis. There are still millions of displaced people who are living in refugee camps either inside Syria or in Jordan\, Lebanon\, and Turkey. Thousands of missing detainees are suffering inside security interrogation centers. And\, the economic situation in Syria is deteriorating daily as poverty and hunger spread. \nBooks will be available for sale during the event. 100% of the proceeds go to outreach\, advocacy\, and the support of Syrian refugee youth and communities through Karam Foundation.
