SUMMARY:Book Talk in Lithuanian: Prof G. Subačius on Simonas Daukantas' Orthography
DESCRIPTION:Kviečiame į susitikimą su Ilinojaus Universiteto profesoriumi\, kalbininku Giedriumi Subačiumi\, kuris neseniai išleido įspūdingo dydžio veikalą „Simono Daukanto Sankt Peterburgo ortografija (1834-1846)“. \nTRANSLATION: \nWe invite you to a presentation by linguist and author Prof. Giedrius Subačius\, from University of Illinois\, who has recently published an impressively sized work entitled “Simon Daukantas’ St Petersburg Orthography (1834-1846)”. The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn more about the 19th Century Lithuanian author Simonas Daukantas’ life and works. Daukantas’ personality\, activities and importance to our history are still not widely known. \nWhat is known or not known about Daukantas\, and what we may never know of him will be explored. Professor Subačius is a true expert on Daukantas\, having written about him in his dissertation\, and more recently he has returned to the subject and published two monographs on Daukantas’ writing. He will talk about what Daukantas did in St Petersburg. For example\, did you know that there he met Valančius\, worked side by side\, and even created his own “Samogitian Academy”? Was it easy and cheap to publish books at that time? Do you know that Daukantas published 13 Lithuanian books in St Petersburg and not all printers understood Daukantas’ Lithuanian texts? What new methods are used today to find out when manuscripts were written? What can spelling tell us in general? Do you know that Daukant’s stable spelling is linked to his spiritual upliftment\, and that the irregularity of his spelling is often the result of despondency\, lack of harmony and illness? \nAll this and more will be revealed at Prof. Giedrius Subačius presentation on Saturday\, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nFree admission. Donations and Balzekas Museum membership subscriptions very welcome. \nFor more information\, call 773-582-6500 or e-mail: info@balzekasmuseum.org. \nThis program is sponsored in part by the Members and Donors of the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture and by a CityArts grant from the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Award Dinner Honoring "Saulute" Sunlight Children's Aid"
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture honors exceptional individuals who\, through their talents\, efforts\, and achievements\, have distinguished themselves and contributed to the betterment of humanity. The Award is the highest and longest-standing civic honor of its kind outside of Lithuania. The roster of former honorees includes civic and cultural leaders\, physicians\, artists\, scholars\, diplomats\, and even two Lithuanian Presidents. \nThis year\, the Award of Excellence will be presented to the Illinois-based charity “Saulutė” ~ Sunlight Children’s Aid for Lithuania and posthumously to the organization’s founder\, Mrs. Indrė Tijūnėlis. Born from her initiative\, vision\, and resolve\, Sunlight Children’s Aid has brought light to hundreds of Lithuania’s neediest children and raised over $4 million dollars to date\, thanks to the volunteers and donors who lent a hand along the way. Now in its thirtieth year with the next generation of leaders at its helm\, Sunlight Children’s Aid continues to grow and expand its reach to ensure that all Lithuania’s children thrive and achieve their fullest potential. \nThe Award dinner\, which is also the Museum’s annual fundraiser\, is a long-standing tradition and a much-anticipated social event of the calendar year. This year’s attendees will get a ‘behind-the-scenes’ viewing of notable objects in the Museum’s collections including recently acquired paintings\, as well as photographs\, films\, and documents ‘rediscovered’ during our digitization process. \nPlease join us on Saturday\, December 3\, 2022\, at 6 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd.\, Chicago\, as we celebrate Sunlight Children’s Aid\, its late founder\, and the tradition of honoring and preserving excellence at the Museum. Tickets are $135 per person and $225 for Patron Donors. Black tie attire is optional. R.S.V.P. by November 22. Everyone is warmly invited to attend! \n

SUMMARY:"Lithuania in 1922" - A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Balzekas Museum presents “Lithuania in 1922 – a Symposium\nLithuanian American contributions during the first formative years of Lithuania’s statehood is the subject of “Lithuania in 1922\,” a symposium on Saturday\, November 12\, 2022\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd.\nNEWS RELEASE:\nFrom Meat Packers and Coal Miners to Nation Builders: How Lithuanian American immigrants helped their beleaguered homeland achieve freedom\, independence\, and U.S. recognition a century ago\nChicago\, Oct. 22\, 2022 — Lithuanian American contributions to Lithuania’s freedom\, independence and diplomatic recognition by the United States is the subject of “Lithuania in 1922\,” a symposium at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago on Saturday\, November 12\, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nThese first-wave immigrants\, many of humble beginnings\, who toiled in Pennsylvania and Illinois coal mines\, East Coast factories\, and Midwestern farms — the so-called “big shoulders” of Chicago’s stockyards and steel mills — heeded the call of their beleaguered homeland and helped lift it from over a century of Russian subjugation and oppression. \nTheir actions were pivotal to the success of Lithuania’s independence struggle in 1918 and to the United States’ de jure recognition of Lithuanian statehood in 1922. In effect\, they helped lay the cornerstone for the freedom and democracy Lithuania enjoys today. \nThe aspirations\, tactics\, and accomplishments of Lithuanian Americans then hold many lessons for our own turbulent times\, according to Irena Brokas Chambers\, curator of the Balzekas Museum’s For Freedom about Lithuanian American support of Lithuania’s struggle for independence and freedom and No Home To Go To exhibitions about World War II Baltic refugees. \n“What Lithuanian Americans did was not only pivotal to Lithuania’s struggle for freedom\,” said Chambers\, in her presentation to the American Association of Baltic Studies conference in Seattle this past May. “Their success in gaining independence and [U.S.] recognition is a singular exemplar of what must be done in the continuing struggle to end oppression and champion freedom throughout the world.” \nFormerly the curator of collections at the Library of Congress\, Chambers will present “A Case for Lost Causes: Lithuanian American Support of Freedom\, Independence\, and Recognition for their Ancestral Homeland” at the November 12 symposium. \n“Lithuanian Americans’ Final Contribution to the Recognition of Lithuania by the United States on July 28\, 1922” is the subject of a presentation by guest scholar Piotr Szlaužys\, a PhD candidate from the Institute of History and Political Sciences at the University of Białystok\, Poland. His research interests include Lithuanian Americans’ efforts towards U.S.’ recognition of Lithuania after World War I\, U.S. policy towards the Baltic States from 1918 to 1922\, and Lithuanian immigration to the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. \nOther presenters include Balzekas Museum film consultant\, filmmaker Arvydas Reneckis\, who will discuss and share sourced material including archival film footage\, photographs\, and interviews\, for his current project\, Lithuanian Americans: Envoys of Nation\, a film premiering in 2023\, and his recent film about the Lithuanian Liberty Bell\, a gift of Lithuanian Americans to their ancestral homeland\, also in 1922. \nGuest speaker Ramunė Račkauskas\, granddaughter of Lithuania’s second president\, Aleksandras Stulginskis\, who was in office when U.S. President Warren B. Harding conferred de jure diplomatic recognition to Lithuania\, Latvia\, and Estonia on July 28\,1922. She will speak about President Stulginskis’s term and his legacy. The Museum’s numismatic exhibitions curator\, Frank Passic\, will speak about the history of the Litas\, Lithuania’s first unit of currency\, introduced in 1922. \nSymposium attendees will have an opportunity to numismatic collections\, the For Freedom exhibition\, and other related items of the period in the Museum’s collections and exhibitions. Of special interest is “The Ploughman” (1922)\, Lithuanian sculptor Petras Rimša’s iconic bronze sculpture\, symbolizing the spirit of the Lithuania nation and its resilience and resolve—then and now—in setting the course for Lithuania’s future. This sculpture is on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston. \nIN-PERSON AND/OR ON ZOOM\, REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS \nThis is an in-person event at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd.\, Chicago IL 60629. Those unable to attend\, can watch scheduled presentations over Zoom. Registration is required for all participants. (Pre-registered Zoom participants will receive links to each presentation a couple days before the event.) \nREGISTER THROUGH EVENTBRITE: https://lithuania1922.eventbrite.com
or by phone: 773.582.6500. \nFEE: $20 Non-Members; Members $10; Students: $5. Light refreshments will be provided. \nFor co-sponsorship opportunities or media inquiries\, please contact Sigita Balzekas at 773.582.6500 or email admin@balzekasmuseum.org. \nEveryone is warmly welcome to attend!\nThis event is sponsored in part by the Members and Private Donors of the Balzekas Museum as well as the following grantors: the Illinois Arts Council Agency\, the City of Chicago Department of Culture and Special Events and CityArts. SUMMARY:Kalnas Ensemble Concert
DESCRIPTION:Balzekas Museum welcomes the Kalnas Ensemble string quartet featuring original compositions inspired by ancient Lithuanian folk music \n\n\n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, Sept. 17\, 2022\, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture welcomes the Kalnas Ensemble to Chicago for what promises to be a memorable concert and exploration of the origins of Lithuanian music. “Kalnas” means “hill” in Lithuania and points to the group’s ethnographic and geographic origins. For the past 150 years\, the hills of Pennsylvania have been home to many Lithuanian immigrants and their descendants\, who settled the region\, worked in the region’s coal mines\, and passed down their deep love of traditional Lithuanian music. Founded by Composer\, Educator\, and Violinist Dr. Stanley Chepaitis\, the string quartet’s repertoire will include Chepaitis’s original compositions inspired by ancient Lithuanian traditional plyphonic folk songs called “sutartinės.” Everyone is welcome to attend. \nTime: Reception at 6PM – Concert at 7PM \nLocation: Amber Ball Room\, Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd.\, Chicago IL 60629 \nFor more information\, please contact Sigita Balzekas 773-582-6500. \nABOUT THE KALNAS PRESENTATION \nA performance by the Kalnas Ensemble is more than just a concert of passionately played music. It is an exploration of the roots of that music\, bringing together aspects of folklore\, psychology\, history\, and the physics of sound. For this program\, the Kalnas Ensemble will initiate the audience into the unique ethos of Lithuanian traditional music through discussions and demonstrations of its stories\, melodies\, and rhythms as envisioned in Dr. Stanley Chepaitis’ original works.Chepaitis dives deeply into his own Lithuanian heritage\, and into the heart of the songs\, stories\, and dances which form the basis and inspiration for the music he creates. From the ancient Sutartinės\, which come out of northeastern Lithuania\, to more recent folk songs from around the country\, this music paints a picture of ancient and medieval Lithuanian life in its focus on nature and the cycles of life. The string quartet’s voices represent a search for the timeless Lithuanian soul and an attempt to bring that soul to modern ears. This performance by the Kalnas Ensemble is designed to offer an appreciation of the deep roots of Lithuanian culture and its impact on the culture of America and of all humanity in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Film Screening: "Second Hand"
DESCRIPTION:See “Second Hand” (2019) an award-winning documentary on migrants caught up in UK’s used clothing trade by filmmaker Artūras Jevdokimovas \n“Second Hand”\, is a tragicomic tale of the long\, meandering journey of donated second hand clothing: from the doorsteps of English manor houses to smalltown Lithuanian markets and charity shops.\n“Second Hand” (2019) exposes the gritty underside of Europe’s used-clothing trade and the lives of the people caught up in its intricate and far-reaching web. The film exposes how clothes donated to charity in the UK become windfall for profiteers\, who capture and move the goods to second-hand markets in Lithuania and other European countries.\nPart documentary comedy\, part detective story\, “Second Hand” tells the story of four Lithuanian migrants–who come to the UK in search of opportunity but who fall prey to human traffikers and organized criminals. These ringleaders appear to care less for the people they exploit than for the used and discarded clothing they peddle. Despite the clash of cultures and tragicomic incidents\, the four characters manage to maintain hope\, humor\, and dignity in a cruel and inhumane environment thanks to their own grit and to filmmaker/director Artūras Jevdokimovas’s sensitive portrayal . \nMEET FILMMAKER ARTŪRAS JEVDOKIMOVAS\nArtūras Jevdokimovas\, an award-winning Lithuanian filmmaker\, will be on hand for the screening and Q& A afterwards.
