SUMMARY:Walk Like a Preservationist
DESCRIPTION:How can you look at an historic building and know that it should be preserved or landmarked? Join Adam Rubin\, CAC Director of Interpretation\, and member of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks\, and learn what to look for to determine if a building qualifies for preservation designation. \nChicago’s historic resources lend our city its unique sense of place. But what does it take to legally ensure a building’s protection? How are historic construction materials cared for differently than newer materials? And what will we need to do differently to protect a newer and expanded class of culturally significant sites as they become “historic”? \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nThis outdoor program will focus on sites near the CAC and the Chicago River and will involve walking less than a mile. The program will begin and end at the CAC. \nPROGRAM SPEAKER: ADAM RUBIN\n \nAdam Rubin is an architectural historian and has worked as a researcher\, writer and preservation educator in cities across the country. He currently serves as Director of Interpretation at the Chicago Architecture Center. Prior to assuming this position\, Adam contributed work to an historic resources study of properties along Chicago’s North Lake Shore Drive\, with an emphasis on the documentation of Modernist residential high-rises along the lakefront. Previously\, Adam has developed and led public education initiatives and outreach programs focused on historic resources and landscapes at Docomomo US\, Landmark West\, the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Los Angeles Conservancy.

DESCRIPTION:This intimate event brings co-curators for ReFramed and ReCovered into conversation around the many benefits that trees impart to cities. Learn about the vision and themes of these complementary exhibits and join the curators for a gallery tour. \nThis program is $15 for admission and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn “ReCovered: Chicago’s Urban Tree Canopy” we consider the many benefits of lining our streets with trees. This immersive exhibit connects people to an element of nature we are inherently drawn to but often ignore as integral to the livability of cities and resilience of neighborhoods. Through the exhibit’s interactivity\, we can sense how trees serve to soften the hard edges of our built surroundings. \nThe companion exhibit\, “ReFramed: The Future of Cities in Wood\,” transitions from horizontal\, protective cover to a soaring vertical space\, introducing visitors to a very different function for trees in the city: buildings constructed from mass timber\, a new structural material which holds great promise for sustainable development and breathtaking design. \nHear from Ryan Gann and Ian Spula\, co-curators on ReCovered and ReFramed\, respectively. The conversation will be moderated by CAC’s Director of Exhibitions\, Eve Fineman. \nAt the conclusion of the program\, attendees are invited to tour both exhibitions with the curators.

DESCRIPTION:Stained glass has been enhancing buildings around the world for thousands of years. Discover how these windows are designed and then make your own acrylic stained-glass window. \nThis hands-on session will begin with a tour of one of Chicago’s most iconic stained glass windows\, the Preston Bradley Hall’s Tiffany Dome at the Chicago Cultural Center. Workshop participants will learn about the significance of this and other windows around the city. Back at the CAC\, participants will take what they learned and make their own acrylic stained window project to take home. \nThis workshop costs $25 for general admission and $17 for CAC Members. Price includes cost of materials. \nAll supplies for this workshop are provided. \nPlease note that this program will involve a short walk outside between the CAC and the Chicago Cultural Center (about 1 mile).

DESCRIPTION:What can Chicago’s ballparks tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the connection between American cities and America’s favorite pastime. \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn a discussion of his 2019 book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City\, Goldberger offers some valuable context about how baseball and ballparks have shaped our cities\, both physically and psychologically. He tracks the evolution of baseball’s tastes in stadium location and design and why they matter. He explores how the architecture of ballparks\, reflects how we view our cities and the game and how the two relate to each other. \nA book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program. Books will be available at the CAC design store. \nAUTHOR: PAUL GOLDBERGER\n \nPaul Goldberger\, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair\, began his career at The New York Times\, where he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writing on architecture. Later\, and for 15 years\, he was architecture critic for The New Yorker. He is the author of many books\, most recently Ballpark: Baseball in the American City (May\, 2019). Goldberger teaches at the New School and lectures widely around the country on architecture\, design\, historic preservation\, and cities.

DAY\nThe day includes an all-female panel discussion about STEM careers. Make and test solutions at STEM activity stations. \n12:15PM-1:15PM \nCurious about STEM careers? Bring your questions to help shape the conversation. Girls will hear about the unique challenges and successes a panel of female professionals faced as they pursued careers in architecture\, engineering and design. \nNOTES: \n\nAll girls must be accompanied by an adult.\nRefreshments will be served\, and every participant will walk away with a goody bag.

DESCRIPTION:Join Preservation Chicago as they reveal Chicago’s 7 Most Endangered list for 2023. For 20 years\, this list of imminently threatened historic buildings and community assets is used to mobilize the support necessary to save these sites from demolition. \nThis program is FREE with advanced registration. Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWard Miller\, the Executive Director of Preservation Chicago\, will announce the 2023 Chicago 7 Most Endangered and share the history\, threat and recommendations for each selection. \nDespite seemingly impossible odds\, the public interest and attention generated by Preservation Chicago’s Chicago 7 Most Endangered list\, coupled with dedicated advocacy has resulted in a remarkable number of preservation victories over the years. \nIn celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Chicago 7 Most Endangered program\, a brief retrospective will highlight notable wins and losses. \nAIA/CES Credits: 1 LUs \nPRESENTER: WARD MILLER\nWard Miller is the executive director of Preservation Chicago\, a position he has held since 2013. For more than 30 years\, Miller has advocated for the preservation of Chicago’s historic buildings. He spent two decades on the issues committee for Landmarks Illinois and served as vice president of Logan Square Preservation for 15 years. He also helped the City Club of Chicago in its efforts to save the Chicago Theatre\, the Page Brothers Building and several buildings on Block 37. Prior to his current role\, Miller worked on many other restoration projects including Holy Family Church\, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Heller House and the grand staircase at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Over the course of the day\, children are encouraged to explore the multiple avenues of the engineering profession through interactive stations and activities\, including: \n\nE-Fest youth tour: Join us in learning about Chicago’s iconic neighborhoods.\nPhoto station: Say “cheese” at our themed photo booth station!\nCreate your own elevated train: Did you know that an empty CTA car weighs 57\,000 pounds? Learn about the strong structures that hold up our elevated trains\, then create your own using what you learned.\nExpert Station: Participants will receive feedback on their designs from experts in the field and learn about the variety of careers that help a city keep moving.\n\nAll this and more is awaiting children ages 8-14 at CAC’s 2023 Engineering Fest!

DESCRIPTION:The CAC’s newest exhibition highlights the Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment slated for the former Michael Reese Hospital campus and how a reimagined Singer Pavilion can help bridge this site’s past and future. Join us for a conversation with designers\, architects and educators on the promise of collaborative neighborhood development. \nThis program is FREE with advanced registration. Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWhen Michael Reese Hospital opened its doors in 1881 it was one of few hospitals to admit patients regardless of their race and religion. Now the hospital’s sole remaining building\, the Singer Pavilion\, is poised to anchor the first phase of the $3.8 billion Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment on Chicago’s South Side. Graduate students in Architecture from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\, University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee and 5th Year Undergraduate students in Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology have been given the opportunity to creatively redesign the Singer Pavilion to meet these aspirations. \nIn this panel discussion moderated by CAC CEO Eleanor Gorski\, we will explore the design ideas and discuss the role of megadevelopments in revitalizing neighborhoods. How can students and local communities meaningfully participate in these important development partnerships? Chicago is a hub for architectural education. By exhibiting innovative student work that helps drive tangible outcomes we can bring academic and professional worlds closer together for the benefit of all. \nAt the conclusion of the panel\, there will be a small reception celebrating the opening of this exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:This winter the CAC will be transforming our galleries into a temporary cineplex and welcoming the New York City-based Architecture & Design Film Festival. The line-up includes 15 feature films and more than a dozen free film shorts from all across the world\, each sharing a unique story of innovation and sustainability in architecture\, design and fashion. Come join us for this festive celebration for the design-minded. From creative explorations of fascinating architects like Winy Maas and Geoffrey Bawa\, to celebrations in artmaking from Marimekko to street art\, to the behind-the-scenes drama in everything from contemporary design competitions to community preservation movements\, there is something on view for most everyone. \n15 stories of innovation and sustainability in architecture\, design and fashion. Hosted by the Architecture and Design Film Fest in partnership with the CAC\, all showings will be at the Chicago Architecture Center\, 111 E Wacker Drive. \nTickets are $20/film or $15 for CAC Members. Your ticket includes a single film showing\, access to view all ADFF Short Films before or after your movie time\, and headphone rental as needed.
