During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. SUMMARY:Threads of Identity: Stitching Stories Through Portrait Quilts
DESCRIPTION:In this unique presentation\, artists will share their deeply personal approaches to transforming photographic images into expressive textile art. Through storytelling and visual examples\, they will discuss their inspirations\, creative processes\, techniques\, fabric selection and sourcing\, as well as the technical challenges they’ve encountered—and the innovative solutions they’ve discovered along the way. \nThe event will conclude with an open Q&A\, offering the audience a chance to engage directly with the artists. \nThis event is part of the Stitching Stories workshop and exhibition series. This is a collaboration between the Heritage Museum of Asian Art and the Needles and Threads Quilters Guild (ntqg.org)\, supported by Healing Illinois. \n  \nArtist bio: \nJoyce Weathington\n Joyce Weathington has been sewing since her teenage years\, but she found her true artistic calling five years ago when she discovered quilting. In particular\, she has developed a passion for portrait quilting—capturing faces\, memories\, and stories through Needles and Threads Quilters Guild. Her work reflects both her love of fabric and her desire to experiment with textile as a storytelling medium. \nDorothy Burge\n Dorothy Burge is a multimedia artist and community activist whose work is deeply rooted in social justice. Drawing inspiration from both historical and contemporary struggles for equity\, she uses quilting as her activist voice. A self-taught fiber artist\, Dorothy began creating quilts in the 1990s. She comes from a long line of Mississippi quilters\, whose traditions of repurposing old clothing into beautiful quilts continue to influence her powerful work today. \nDoris Barnes\n Doris Barnes fell in love with sewing at a young age in Mississippi\, where she was taught by her godmother. Since then\, her passion for sewing and quilting has only grown. Known for her bold color choices and non-traditional patterns\, Doris creates garments and quilts that reflect her vibrant personality. An award-winning quilter\, she quilts every single day and considers it her life’s passion. She also shares her skills by teaching quilting at her church and making charity quilts for those who are ill or homebound. \nAccessibility:\nThe museum is wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:Heritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation\, performance\, and workshop series called If the Sky Could Dream. DESCRIPTION:Each day we begin anew\, a cycle that persists since the dawn time. Each moment we encounter is its own universe. Tea is fabled to have existed in human culture for more than 4\,500 years\, but only as a daily beverage since the third century. Through tea we encounter the new and the old\, the pure and the everyday. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll experience a presentation of Chinese tea ceremony and a guide to various tea types. Along with this we’ll discuss brewing practices\, aesthetics\, and methods to bring harmony for ourselves and in gathering to share moments of subtle joy!! In this class\, you will learn the fundamental principles and techniques of Tai Chi\, allowing you to experience its numerous physical and mental benefits. Whether one is a beginner or has some experience with Tai Chi\, this class offers something for everyone. \nDuring the classes\, our Tai Chi Master Peter Wong will guide you through a series of flowing movements and postures\, known as forms\, designed to enhance flexibility\, improve posture\, and cultivate a calm and centered state of mind. You will also explore the concept of “qi”（气）\, the vital life energy\, and learn how to harness and cultivate it through Tai Chi practice. Through the combination of demonstrations\, hands-on practice\, and group exercises\, you will gain a deeper understanding of the principles of Tai Chi and its application in daily life. You will also learn relaxation techniques\, breathing exercises\, and meditation practices that complement the physical aspects of Tai Chi. \n  \nBenefits of attending this workshop: \n• Improve physical balance\, coordination\, and flexibility. \n• Enhance mental clarity and focus. \n• Reduce stress and promote relaxation. \n• Cultivate a sense of inner peace and well-being. \n• Boost energy levels and vitality \n• Develop a greater connection between mind\, body\, and spirit. \nThis class is open to all levels. He has been practicing Traditional Kungfu for over fifty years and has been an instructor of Tai Chi at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Peter Wong was a director of the 26th and 27th Board of Directors of the Chin Woo Athletic Association Hong Kong Limited.
