SUMMARY:Get Your Architectural Kitsch on Route 66
DESCRIPTION:Called the Mother Road\, U.S. Highway 66 has been a fixture in American history since its inception in 1926. Join us for a trip along the highway – known simply as Route 66 – as we look at the best examples of what has been called Roadside Architecture: the visual reflections of the American regions the road crisscrossed. \nRoute 66 was an exploration trail to America’s west\, became a migration trail from the Dust Bowl to California\, a military transport road during World War II\, and later reverted to a tourism trek. Typically\, the vernacular architecture along the way was suited for its purpose as gas stations\, eateries or souvenir shops\, all new building types in the 1930s. Over the years\, the architectural styles illustrated what many would call “kitsch\,” defined as cheaply made\, disposable\, accidental or even tacky. Have some fun\, get your kicks – and kitsch – on Route 66. \nPresenter: Ellen Shubart \nA lifelong Chicagoan\, CAC docent Ellen Shubart spent more than two decades as a journalist\, taught at the college level and ended her career as an advocate for sustainable city planning. A historian by training\, with advanced degrees in U.S. History and Historic Preservation\, she has written four books all with an emphasis on the history of the City of Chicago: What’s With Chicago?\, Images of America: Glencoe\, Illinois\, Taylor Street\, Chicago’s Little Italy and most recently\, Chicago: An Illustrated Timeline.

SUMMARY:Stained-Glass in Chicago's Synagogues
DESCRIPTION:When we think of stained glass windows\, we often think of Churches. Synagogues also have a rich tradition of stained-glass windows. Join us as we explore how these windows beautify sacred spaces across Chicago. \nIn 2021 Chicagoans were alerted to the possibility of the Loop Synagogue closing due to the impact of the pandemic. Fortunately\, the synagogue has recovered\, but the possibility raised concern about the fate of its magnificent stained glass window\, “Let There be Light” by Abraham Rattner. While this is undoubtedly the city’s best-known synagogue stained-glass window\, there are many others\, ranging from nineteenth century anonymous works to some by well-known artists. We will feature them in the program. \nThis presentation will expand our understanding of stained-glass windows in area synagogues as we explore the artists behind these windows and what happens to the windows when synagogues move and/or close. \nThis is a virtual program with a $15 registration fee and is free for CAC Members \nPRESENTER: SUSAN JACOBSON\n \nSusan Jacobson has been a docent since 2008 and gives nine different tours. She is co-director of Synagogues by Bus and Tiffany Treasures. Prior to becoming a docent\, Susan enjoyed a 40-year career in academic librarianship at the University of Pennsylvania\, Columbia University\, and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a roundtable conversation exploring ideas for a renewed LaSalle Street corridor\, which currently finds itself at a crossroads. How does an austere financial district transform into a vibrant 24-hour neighborhood\, and who will call this neighborhood home? \nIn many ways\, the fate of the LaSalle Street corridor and the broader downtown are intertwined. If the most viable future for downtown is flexible adaptation to a mix of uses\, there is no better place to test this hypothesis than along this iconic office corridor. Recognizing this\, the City of Chicago recently launched a planning initiative for a reimagined LaSalle Street\, freeing up all-important tax increment financing (TIF) and inviting development proposals. \nHowever\, there are questions about the challenges LaSalle Street must overcome: namely\, what is the prescription for its aging building stock? Will tax incentives be sufficient to spark investment in complex residential conversions and protection of the corridor’s landmark architecture? And how central is a redesign and greening of the public realm to LaSalle’s long-term success or failure? Our roundtable of leading local experts in planning\, design and real estate sets out to find answers. \nSPEAKER: PAUL DE SANTIS\nPaul De Santis is a partner and co-design director at Goettsch Partners\, where he leads the design on many of the firm’s office\, hotel and mixed-use projects in the U.S. and Asia. Paul’s recent work includes the LEED Platinum-certified Zurich North America Headquarters in Schaumburg\, Illinois\, and the Viceroy hotel in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. His work in Asia focuses on tall and supertall buildings\, with key projects in Beijing\, Shanghai\, Shenzhen\, Guangzhou and Wuhan. Paul received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Tech. He has membership with the AIA\, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and the Urban Land Institute\, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.\nSPEAKER: CINDY CHAN ROUBIK\nCindy Chan Roubik is a Deputy Commissioner with Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD) leading the Central\, North and Northwest Planning Regions. Recently\, she has managed the LaSalle Street Reimagined initiative\, the Central City Recovery Roadmap\, the Bronzeville Lakefront project and updates to the Fulton Market Innovation District Plan and Chicago River Design Guidelines. Cindy is a 2022 Fellow of University of Chicago’s Civic Leadership Academy program and is a LEED accredited professional. Prior to civil service\, she worked as a licensed architect for a local architecture firm on several high-rises and historic rehabilitation projects. Upon graduation from McGill University’s Architecture School\, Cindy was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Medal for the top student in her graduating class\, and the RAIC Gold Medal Award for most outstanding thesis. Cindy was also awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal Award for leadership and service. \nSPEAKER: LEON WALKER\nAs the Managing Principal of DL3 for the last 20 years\, Leon works closely with municipalities\, anchor institutions\, and Fortune 500 companies to implement projects that are sensitive to a neighborhood’s character while creating economic opportunities for local residents. His cutting-edge community development projects have generated thousands of jobs and brought grocery stores and medical services into the food and healthcare deserts on Chicago’s South Side. Over the next 10 years\, his vision is to help create 10\,000 jobs and 10 million square feet of new commercial space in Chicago’s neighborhoods. \nPrior to taking on the leadership of DL3 Realty\, Leon worked in corporate real estate services at Jones Lang LaSalle\, and in real estate capital markets at Citicorp Securities. A graduate of the University of Chicago’s Law School\, Leon also holds a Master of Business Administration from Booth School of Business and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. He serves as a Board member of the Greater Chicago Food Depository\, the Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate at Roosevelt University\, and several other organizations. \n

But over a two-week period\, as his life dissolves into chaos\, this broken and alienated immortal awakens to the possibility for happiness and to the capacity for love. \nSteven Sherrill is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and holds an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The recipient of a NEA Fellowship for Fiction\, he has published four novels and one book of poetry. His debut novel\, The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break\, was published in the UK and translated into eight languages. Neil Gaiman selected it as one of six audiobooks to launch “Neil Gaiman Presents” for Audible.com. A prolific painter and nascent musician\, Sherrill is now a professor of English & Integrative Arts at Penn State Altoona.

DESCRIPTION:Join Surinder Martignetti Frank Konrath from See Chicago Dance and Kate Flynn the Chicago Collections Consortium as they discuss the work of creating digital and hybrid events and exhibitions in the context of reevaluating our attitudes and understanding of these mediums. They’ll also consider how they can be thought of and seen as resources for future arts and cultural endeavors. Moderated by Suzy Kahn Winberg of Big Shoulder Stories. \nSpeakers:\nSurinder Martignetti\, Community Engagement Manager for See Chicago Dance\, Arts Ninja\, and Consulting Producer\nSurinder Martignetti holds a BA in Dance and Theater and a Graduate Diploma in Education from Western Sydney University in Australia. She also holds a Masters Degree in Arts\, Entertainment\, from Columbia College Chicago. Surinder has deep knowledge of the Chicago dance field and has served as part of See Chicago Dance in various program management capacities since 2013. Other career highlights include roles with the Chicago Dancing Festival\, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago Ideas Week and The International Music Foundation. Along with her life as an arts administrator\, she is a dancer\, jewelry maker\, poet\, and storyteller\, she also performs under the alias Miss Mittens. \nFrank Konrath\, Media Specialist at See Chicago Dance\, Transmedia Producer and Founder of Clovispoint \nKate Flynn\, Portal Manager for Chicago Collections Consortium\nKate Flynn (she/her) is the Portal Manager for the Chicago Collections Consortium and also the Digital Programs & Metadata Project Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She previously was a Resident Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago for Digital Programs & Services. She earned an MSI from the University Of Michigan School Of Information in 2011\, specializing in Preservation of Information and Archives & Records Management. She is most interested in issues around digital preservation\, user experience and metadata. \nModerator:\nSuzy Kahn Weinberg\, Executive Producer of Big Shoulders Stories\nA writer\, producer and active community leader Suzy (she/her) has had many roles in her personal and professional career that all center on the power of storytelling. Suzy is currently a co-producer of a monthly live storytelling series called ​Is this a thing?​\, now in its 9th year\, featuring true personal narratives told on stage. She is a founding member and creator of the show– conducting writing workshops\, coaching performers\, and hosting the events when she isn’t herself performing an original story. Big Shoulders Stories​ is Suzy’s latest venture\, partnering with Chicago’s nonprofit organizations to identify\, nurture\, and showcase storytellers and their stories.
