DESCRIPTION:NOTES FROM OUR COMMUNITY is a series of events inspired by TimeLine’s production of Notes from the Field by Anna Deavere Smith.\nJoin us at The Logan Center for a reading of TimeLine South’s Recidivism and a T-Shirt Making Project!\nThursday\, February 29\, 2024\n4:30pm – 7pm (play reading begins at 5pm) \nReva and David Logan Center for the Arts\n915 E. 60th St.\, Chicago\nScreening Room \nABOUT RECIDIVISM – conceived and created by the TimeLine South 2022 Ensemble\nThe students of Connor High are trying their best to navigate their school’s new strict policies but when they learn that a prison is being built blocks away\, it sparks a fire within the students to take action towards autonomy. In a battle to break oppressive cycles\, they form an alliance to gain respect from those in authority and create a better future for their community. \nThe 60-minute play reading and a brief post-show discussion will be followed by a creative T-shirt making project for those interested in participating! This event is intended for all theater lovers\, but is especially for teens and young adults.\nFREE! Reservations required.

SUMMARY:Reflections on 1919 with Eve L. Ewing
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation on 1919\, Black Chicago and Resilience. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nA hot summer day set Chicago ablaze in 1919. Seventeen-year-old Eugene Williams crossed an invisible line in Lake Michigan that divided the segregated shores\, and he was killed by a group of white beachgoers. His death sparked a deadly 13-day riot. The fighting spread throughout the city\, then throughout the country in what became known as the Red Summer. In Chicago\, 38 people died\, more than 500 were injured\, and thousands were left homeless. \nThe ignition of the Red Summer proved that racism and prejudice had always existed in the north; it was just quieter here. And it’s a pervasive silence that’s lingered over a century – the scars of the Red Summer are still present\, open and bleeding in the underlying systems of inequity today. \nDr. Eve L. Ewing\, Chicago-based sociologist and poet\, explored the Red Summer and expanded on its lasting impact in her second collection of poems\, titled 1919. The book was recently adapted for the stage by J. SUMMARY:Kozmopoliz Kampopoliz: A Tour of Cosmo Campoli's Hyde Park
DESCRIPTION:Take a trolley tour through the Kozmopoliz\, also known as Cosmo Campoli’s Hyde Park\, as we celebrate the 100th birthday of the late artist.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nMany know Campoli’s Bird of Peace sculpture in Nichols Park\, but he lived in the neighborhood for over 40 years\, leaving his mark on everything from what was eaten at certain restaurants (Spaghetti A La Gargoyle anyone?) to what got shown at the 57th St. Art Fair. On this tour\, we’ll retrace his steps\, searching out the bits of Hyde Park’s past that survive to this day. \nTour Guide: Paul Durica is the Director of Exhibitions at the Newberry Library. He has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago\, where he developed a series of free and interactive walks\, talks\, and reenactments dealing with Chicago’s past. These public history experiences have received local and national media attention and led to collaborations with cultural institutions from across the city. This is his fifth Hyde Park tour. Masks and proof of vaccination required. \nThe trolley will load and unload passengers outside the Logan Center for the Arts\, 915 E 60th St. \n\n\nThis event is part of a day-long series of events\, Cosmo’s Cosmos: 100 Years of Birth\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nMarch 21\, 2022 will be the centenary of the birth of sculptor and Hyde Park resident Cosmo Campoli. Campoli (1922-1997) was part of the “Monster Roster” group associated with the Chicago Imagists in the 1950s\, including Leon Golub and H.C. Westermann. His work\, which frequently centered on themes of birth and death\, was exhibited as part of the Chicago Imagists at the Hyde Park Art Center. His sculpture\, “Bird of Peace\,” known colloquially as “The Egg\,” is a well-known piece of public art in Nichols Park. \n\nThis event is part of the Chicago Lost & Found series of events focused on Chicago art history created by Media Burn Archive. It is being held in partnership with the Smart Museum of Art and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago.  It is presented as part of Art Design Chicago Now\, an initiative funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art that amplifies the voices of Chicago’s diverse creatives\, past and present\, and explores the essential role they play in shaping the now.

Find out more at https://pocketguidetohell.com/ \nPresentations will include: \n\nA riff on the Jean Debuffet’s seminal 1951 lecture “Anticultural Positions” by Northwestern University Professor Rebecca Zorach;\nPersonal and artistic remembrances from renowned sculptor Virginio Ferarri\, whose sculptures Dialogo (1971)\, Interlocking (1993)\, and Caring (2015) are visible on the University of Chicago campus;\nA screening of Cosmo’s Cosmos\, a 1981 documentary short by Annette Barbier and Terry Moyement;\nNewly unearthed 1991 footage of Campoli performing his unique take on beat poetry\, shot by filmmaker Joe Winston\, director of the soon-to-be-released documentary Punch 9 for Harold Washington;\nA screening of a cooking demonstration of the recipe for Cosmo’s Special Spaghetti\, a truly unique dish that reflected Campoli’s whimsical attitude. Won Kim\, chef at Bridgeport’s Kimski restaurant\, who is also a graffiti artist and DJ\, recreated Cosmo’s famous dish that he used to serve at the Blue Gargoyle.\n\nAdvance RSVP’s are encouraged.
