SUMMARY:Sounds of Resistance: An Overview of the Evolution of Puerto Rican Music
DESCRIPTION:For most outsiders\, Puerto Rico is a vacation destination. But Puerto Rico’s brutal colonial experience has shaped her musical expression over the centuries. This lecture will focus on how traditional and contemporary forms have provided a platform for creative expression and resistance to all forms of oppression. Video and audio recordings and slides from Mr. Santos’ collection will provide a snapshot of a complex and profound musical history. Mr. Santos is the subject of the documentary Santos — Skin to Skin. \nPresented in partnership with the International Latino Cultural Center and the Chicago Latino Film Festival. \nPart of SRBCC’s Bomba Lab Series.

SUMMARY:Olga Cerpa & Mestisay
DESCRIPTION:Free (with a suggested donation of $10 at the door).\nReservations are strongly recommended!\nCo-presented with the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center. \nSaturday\, February 11th – 8:00 PM \nOlga Cerpa is the most important female voice of the Canary Islands. Nominated for two Latin Grammys\, she has shared the stage with such artists as Omara Portuondo and Joan Manuel Serrat\, among others. Cerpa and Mestisay use “Jallo\,” an insular word that refers to the objects that the sea throws to the Canary shores\, to create splendid songs inspired by the musical influences that reach the beaches of their native land. Latin America\, Portugal\, Cape Verde and the African continent leave their mark as they revisit island songs that have been “found” in these years of musical journeys and that they rediscover for themselves and their audience through original arrangements. Olga Cerpa y Mestisay will be presenting their latest production\, Palosanto\, where they invited 17 renowned guitarists from around the world to record with them. \nCanary Islands and Puerto Rico \nThe commonalities between Canarios and Boricuas have intrigued generations of islanders from both sides of the Atlantic for decades. Probably the most evident similarity between the smallest of the Greater Antilles and the southernmost archipiélago in Spain is found in the language. However\, the strong connection between these two cultures goes beyond the Caribbean Spanish accent\, and can also be seen in its music\, aboriginal roots\, and profound ties to the African continent. Join us as we celebrate the music of the Canary Island and Puerto Rico in this special co-production of the International Latino Cultural Center and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Fabiola Méndez Trio & Negrura Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Fabiola Méndez: Live Trio Performance and Negrura Documentary Screening \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nFabiola Méndez is a Puerto Rican cuatro player\, educator\, and composer that has taken part in a musical movement\, crossing over the lines of genres such as folkloric\, jazz & Latin. \nRecognized for being the first student to graduate from Berklee College of Music with the cuatro as principal instrument (2018)\, Fabiola has worked and performed for artists such as: Totó La Momposina\, Eddie Palmieri\, Puerto Rican Symphony Orchestra\, the Chicago Philharmonic\, and Pedro Capó\, among others. She currently works as an independent \nartist all around the Northeast and Puerto Rico\, collaborating with organizations such as Celebrity Series of Boston\, WBUR\, MFA Boston\, MassArt\, and Agora Cultural Architects\, as well as composing for animated TV productions for Sesame Workshop\, Fred Rogers Productions\, and WGBH. \nFabiola Méndez’s project Negrura (released in 2022) is an audiovisual storytelling experience that showcases the stories of Afro-Latinx folks from Boston’s Latin Quarter Cultural District. The film aims to create spaces for conversations about colorism\, anti-blackness\, discrimination\, and racism within our own Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latinx community.  Music\, at the core of the project\, connects our voices to provide a space for self-reflection\, support\, and healing.
