Tanmoy Bose in concert. \nPandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar’ is one of the most brilliant and popular classical artists from India. A dedicated musician who is also interested in composing\, arranging and experimenting in other areas of music. From composing the background score of meaningful films to musical ballets – Tejendra is always ready to take on any musical challenge. He has composed the music for the Bengali films like ‘Shongshoy’ and ‘Hononkal’ of Saibal Mitra\, Tollylights of Arjun Chakraborty\, and a lot of Telefilms. He has also composed and arranged music for different singers like Ghulam Ali\, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty\, Haimanti Shukla\, and Arati Mukherjee. \nTejendra plays the fretless sarod and represents the Maihar gharana (school) having learned the instrument for many years from Bahadur Khan before his passing and later from his cousin Ali Akbar Khan. \nTanmoy Bose is a percussionist and tabla player\, musical producer\, film actor and composer. Born and raised in Kolkata\, the cultural capital of India\, Bose grew up in downtown Kolkata at a time when Indian Music was being paid serious attention in the West due to the efforts of the legendary maestros. His house used to throb with activity-business\, music\, medicine at all and was rightfully considered as a nodal point of practitioners and connoisseurs of all the above and could boast of being a landmark in the area. Bose is one of the foremost musicians in contemporary world music and an indispensable member in the global fraternity of percussion. Bose received his early tutelage from the legendary Kanai Dutta. Bose became the Gandabandh Shagird {formally initiated disciple in Indian classical music} of the noted torchbearer of the Farukhabad gharana Pandit Shankar Ghosh. \nFor Tanmoy\, music and life are inseparable. Rhythm is his quest of truth and beauty- it transcends all other priorities in his life.

DESCRIPTION:AT THE INTERSECTION OF FAITH\, CULTURE AND MUSIC\nis a conversation between Sonny (Artistic Director of Riyaaz Qawwali) and Aaron Cohen (award-winning Chicago music writer) exploring the role of faith\, spirituality and heritage through musical expression. \nSonny is the Artistic Director of Riyaaz Qawwali\, the only Qawwali ensemble in the US. A Qawwal with over 29 years of classical music training\, he has spent half of that time devoted to understanding and growing awareness of qawwali. He grew up learning from his family and went on to receive classical music training. \nAaron Cohen is the author of “Move on Up: Chicago Soul Music and Black Cultural Power” (University of Chicago Press)\, which looks at the social and musical changes that shaped R&B in Chicago during the 1960s and 1970s. This year is the 75th. anniversary of the Partition of British India and the current exhibition at South Asia Institute revolves around the aftermath of the event. The collaborative program that will be presented by SAI and KCCOC will highlight the experiences of the people of the two nations with talks by South Asian and Korean academicians: Dr. Hardeep Dhillon and Dr. Ji-Yeon Yuh\, followed by a musical collaboration by South Asian and Korean musicians: Sandeep Bharadwaj\, Woosung Jung\, Suwan Choi\, Chansoo Lee\, Yun Sil Jang\, Deokhwan Kim. Food from South Asia and Korea will be served. Attendees will have access to the exhibition at SAI following the event.

From Kolkata\, India\, Subrata Bhattacharya (tabla) and Abhisek Lahiri (sarod) collaborate with Ronnie Malley (oud) and George Lawler (percussion) in Chicago\, IL to create a cross-cultural palette of improvisations and original compositions. The group transcends boundaries creating musical dialogue by fluidly moving through raga and maqam\, tala and iqa\, the music theories and rhythms found in South Asia\, the Middle East\, and North Africa. \nEMME brings together related string instruments such as the Middle Eastern oud and the Indian sarod\, and percussion instruments like the Indian tabla and Middle Eastern darbuka and riq. The group’s message is to inform people\, through music\, about the similarities and distinctions between Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures\, which are all too often mistaken for each other in media\, politics\, and Western society. \nTheir debut album is a result of a live rehearsal from a first time encounter between these artists. DESCRIPTION:Through experiential art installations “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories” investigates the Partition of India in 1947. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks 75 years since the Partition of India in 1947\, which created Pakistan\, and eventually\, Bangladesh in 1971. Pritika Chowdhry’s experiential art installations are temporary ‘anti-memorials’ to the Partition. \nOften described as the Holocaust of South Asia\, the Partition triggered the largest migration in human history with over 20 million people displaced\, approximately 2 million killed and over 300\,000 women were abducted in the communal violence that ensued. \nThe exhibition addresses the many facets of the Partition from a counter-memory perspective through experiential art installations. The title alludes to the painful and silenced narratives that have been elided from mainstream discourses of the Partition. \nWhen a memory is unbearable\, how does one memorialize it? And when a history is unspeakable\, how does one talk about it? Known for their own high-energy blend of music that ranges from South Asian classical\, folk and film melodies to West African\, Caribbean\, Latin\, Brazilian and Reggae blended with American Funk and Soul music. They will perform an intimate “unplugged” acoustic set of rarely performed music from their 25-year repertoire and debut new original material. They will also be sharing the story of their long musical journey\, their creative process\, and their inner workings.
