DESCRIPTION:East Meets Middle East (EMME) is a musical collective across continents celebrating the rich traditions of the Middle East and South Asia. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n**Limited Seating Capacity. ** Early Ticket Purchase Recommended. \nWhat happens when Indian sarod and tabla meet Middle Eastern oud and darbuka? \nEast Meets Middle East (EMME) is a musical collective across continents celebrating the rich traditions of the Middle East and South Asia. From Kolkata\, India\, Subrata Bhattacharya (tabla) and Abhisek Lahiri (sarod) collaborate with Ronnie Malley (oud) and George Lawler (percussion) in Chicago\, IL to create a cross-cultural palette of improvisations and original compositions. The group transcends boundaries creating musical dialogue by fluidly moving through raga and maqam\, tala and iqa\, the music theories and rhythms found in South Asia\, the Middle East\, and North Africa. \nEMME brings together related string instruments such as the Middle Eastern oud and the Indian sarod\, and percussion instruments like the Indian tabla and Middle Eastern darbuka and riq. The group’s message is to inform people\, through music\, about the similarities and distinctions between Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures\, which are all too often mistaken for each other in media\, politics\, and Western society. \nTheir debut album is a result of a live rehearsal from a first time encounter between these artists. Unable to perform inside Afghanistan today\, the group carries the flame of Afghanistan’s rich and complex musical heritage\, from its early history to the modern era. Included in the program will be traditional ghazals based on the Sufi-inspired poetry of Rumi (who was born in Afghanistan)\, Afghan folk music\, and the iconic hits of legendary singer Ahmad Zahir. \nQais Essar\nQais Essar is an Afghan-American musician\, based in Phoenix\, Arizona. A rabab player and songwriter\, he is most noted for the song “The Crown Sleeps” from the film The Breadwinner\, which won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018. SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories”: Partition Anti-Memorial Project
DESCRIPTION:Through experiential art installations “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories” investigates the Partition of India in 1947. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks 75 years since the Partition of India in 1947\, which created Pakistan\, and eventually\, Bangladesh in 1971. Pritika Chowdhry’s experiential art installations are temporary ‘anti-memorials’ to the Partition. \nOften described as the Holocaust of South Asia\, the Partition triggered the largest migration in human history with over 20 million people displaced\, approximately 2 million killed and over 300\,000 women were abducted in the communal violence that ensued. \nThe exhibition addresses the many facets of the Partition from a counter-memory perspective through experiential art installations. The title alludes to the painful and silenced narratives that have been elided from mainstream discourses of the Partition. \nWhen a memory is unbearable\, how does one memorialize it? And when a history is unspeakable\, how does one talk about it? DESCRIPTION:The South Asia Institute will host Amin Gulgee Performance “Kiss of the Spider Woman”.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThis will be a collaborative performance work with 13-17 participants which will take place over a period of 77 minutes. The approach will be cross-disciplinary as Gulgee will engage actors\, dancers\, visual artists and musicians to work with him. This will be an experiential event and the audience will navigate through the space as the performances simultaneously occur around them. All the senses will be engaged in this journey of touch\, sight\, hearing\, smell and taste. Through these senses information is sent to the brain to help us understand the world around us. Installations and projections will be employed emotively. This will be an act of collective dreaming. As Yoko Ono famously said: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream; a dream you dream together is a reality.”
