SUMMARY:Swedish Folk Art Family Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join art professor Alison Aune in a Swedish folk art Family workshop. Alison will lead participants in creating Fantastical Kurbits. Alison will give a brief gallery tour to share the background of Dalmålning\, also known as kurbits painting or Dala painting\, which flourished in Sweden in the 18th and 19th centuries. The kurbit was a fantastical gourd plant commonly used in folk paintings in Dalarna Sweden\, as a symbol of good luck. After the gallery tour\, participants will create their own creative kurbit interpretations as we revive the tradition using a contemporary color palette. \nFee: $20 members\, $25 everyone else. All participants will create and take home their own kurbits folk art painting\, as well as a coloring book made specifically for this workshop. We will be using acrylic paints\, so this workshop is not suitable for preschool-age children.

SUMMARY:Art Talk: "Gunnar Widforss\, Painter of the National Parks"
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Alan Petersen\n\nThrough the Roaring Twenties and the first half of the Great Depression\, the Swedish-born landscape painter Gunnar Widforss (1879-1934) focused his discerning eye and passionate energy on the national parks of the American West. Due to Widforss’ untimely death at only age 55\, and because the rise of modernism in the early-twentieth century consigned many highly skilled realistic painters to obscurity\, Widforss’ legacy is largely unknown today. The amiable Swede led a bohemian life in search of beautiful and challenging landscapes to paint. Widforss dressed formally as he worked and always attracted wonder-struck onlookers when he painted in Yosemite Valley\, on the rim of Grand Canyon\, and the other locations he favored in the national parks. Park Service friends such as Ansel Hall and Stephen Mather\, as well as tourists\, marveled at the accuracy of his painting and the compelling way in which he was able to capture the dramatic landscapes. Widforss never resorted to sentimental or romanticized depictions\, so prevalent in depictions of western subjects. He very well may be viewed as one of the greatest artists to paint the West and his obscurity is a paradox. The story of Widforss’ life and work is one of great triumph in realistic painting\, and the tragedy of his anonymity and death is a captivating story of a Swedish expatriate who fell in love with the American landscape.\n\nToday\, Widforss’ work is known only to a small number of dedicated collectors\, the descendants of his family and friends\, and those who discover his gem-like paintings when they visit the national parks he depicted.\n\nCurator and author Alan Petersen has been uncovering Widforss’ fascinating story. He has published a catalogue raisonné of Widforss’ works and is working on a monograph on the artist. The catalogue raisonné is available online at gunnarwidforss.org.\n\nAlan Petersen\, Curator of Fine Arts for the Museum of Northern Arizona\, worked on the South Rim of Grand Canyon for three years before moving to Flagstaff to attend NAU in 1980. Alan has curated exhibitions of work by such notable artists as Gunnar Widforss\, Joella Jean Mahoney\, Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton\, Merrill Mahaffey\, Bruce Aiken\, Ed Mell\, and Curt Walters\, among many others.\n\nAlan recently published the Gunnar Widforss Catalogue Raisonné (2020) and continues his work on a monograph on Widforss’ life and art. In 2018\, he co-curated an exhibition of the artist’s work in collaboration with the Ljunbergmuseet in Sweden.\nBefore retiring\, Alan taught art history\, drawing\, and courses pertaining to the Colorado\nPlateau region at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff since 1992. His own art work explores the sources of uranium in Grand Canyon.\n\nThis is a free event with fika for sale.\nTo make a reservation please email museum@samac.org or call 773.782.8111

With this\, this large scholarship is re-launched in a new collaboration during the celebration of Jenny Lind’s 200th anniversary in 2020. \n”I feel extremely honored and touched to have been selected for this year’s Jenny Lind Scholar. Singing has been my passion since childhood\, and now being given an opportunity to share it with others\, thanks to this award\, makes me extremely grateful. Classical music has so much to give and it will be fantastic fun to show what my heart is beating for”\, says Tessan-Maria Lehmussari. \nTessan-Maria has worked with Drottningholm’s Baroque Orchestra\, Young Opera (Royal Swedish Opera) and Norrköping Symphony Orchestra\, among others. \nDinner starts at 6 p.m. and tickets can be bought through the Swedish American Museum website link below or at the Museum. The concert is free. Attendees should plan to arrive at 6.30 p.m. for the concert. \n_______________ \nThe jury’s motivation for the 2020 Scholarship:\n“This year the scholarship goes to Tessan-Maria Lehmussari\, who possesses a rare ability to capture her audience. With her beautiful sounding soprano and her excellent technique she conveys both musicality and joy”. \n”With great satisfaction and expectation\, the Royal Academy of Music hereby enters into a lasting collaboration with Folkets Hus on one of the country’s most extensive and exciting singing grants through the world star Jenny Lind’s donation to the academy”\, says Fredrik Wetterqvist\, the Permanent Secretary of the Royal Swedish Musical Academy. “The special anniversary year 2020 will offer a host of fantastic opportunities for performances and concerts for the scholar and pianist\, both in Sweden and abroad\, and it is a pleasure for us to contribute to this.” \n”It is with great pleasure that we\, together with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music\, give the 2020 Jenny Lind scholarship to Tessan-Maria Lehmussari. Through this award\, we want to support young singers in their careers in the music world\, says Calle Nathanson\, CEO of Folkets Hus & Parker. \nThe Royal Academy of Music and Folkets Hus & Parker have announced a re-launch of the large Jenny Lind scholarship. Since 1875\, the Royal Swedish Musical Academy has managed a donation from the world-famous opera singer Jenny Lind. And since 1965\, the Folkets Hus & Parker have appointed a Jenny Lind Scholar who has toured in both Sweden and North America. From 2020\, when the entire opera world celebrates Jenny Lind’s 200th anniversary\, the Folkets Hus & Parker’s tour activities and the Royal Swedish Musical Academy’s scholarship work in tandem and highlight this year’s scholarship a little extra.
