SUMMARY:Immense Journeys
DESCRIPTION:Immense Journeys: Art\, Nature\, Science and Beyond\nFeaturing Melissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, Anne Hughes \nOn display until March 3rd\, 2024 \nMelissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, and Anne Hughes lead lives rich in creative experiences informed by nature. Day by day\, art practice and the natural world awaken shoots of imaginative reflections and actions. This exhibition brings together varied\, visual art forms to stand on their own and resonate off the others through surprising interconnections (just like nature itself). A purposeful confluence provides many pathways into appreciation of process and range. It allows for thoughtful exploration of the infinite ways in which nature affects our lives and we affect nature. Presented here are works by three artists who\, over decades\, have embraced the wonders of nature and witnessed results of human actions and inactions. Deepfelt desires\, to share their personal artworks and stir the passions of others to engage\, reside at the heart of this exhibition. There is no one-way in. Creativity and nature inspire\, confound\, amaze\, and amuse.

SUMMARY:The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross
DESCRIPTION:UIMA invites you to hear Haydn’s  The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross which he wrote in 1786 in response to a commission from the bishop of Spain’s Cadiz Cathedral. The bishop requested music to accompany the cathedral’s Good Friday service that year. In addition to introductory and concluding sections\, Haydn wrote a movement for each of Jesus’ last sayings or utterances during the crucifixion. \nThe work has nine movements sometimes referred to as “sonatas” or “meditations”: seven Adagios\, each based on Christ’s last utterances\, framed by an Introduction and a dramatic conclusion in Il terremoto (The Earthquake). Each one is in a different key and remarkably varied.  Haydn’s work will be performed by the Village Strings at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cathedral on Wednesday\, April 5\, 2023 at 7 pm .

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Loss: for G
DESCRIPTION:Anders Zanichkowsky is an artist\, weaver\, and the owner of Burial Blankets. Part of the group show “Aesthetics of Loss” (February 18 – April 16) “for G” is a memorial for their first love\, made of handwoven cloth and an audio piece created from cell phone recordings addressing him in death as a way to mourn. The live performance is a chance to experience the work in an intimate gathering that may feel like a cross between a wake and a late-night phone conversation. At turns affectionate\, philosophical\, and raw with grief\, the audio piece circles around themes of romance and youth; the magic of cinema\, art\, and memory; and the vulnerability of queer people to untimely death. \nThe gallery opens for seating at 6:30 and the performance begins promptly at 6:45\, running approximately one hour. Afterwards there will be a reception with the artist in the East gallery. During regular hours\, visitors to the museum can sit with the cloth and listen to the audio piece over their headphones. \n\n\n\n\n RSVP \n\n\n\n\nAccessibility and COVID Precautions: \nUIMA has a wheelchair accessible entrance and mens and womens bathrooms. Proof of vaccination is required and masks must be worn during the performance. There will be armless chairs for all who want them and a section designated for social distancing at 6 feet apart. Light refreshments will be served during the reception and masks will become optional for people eating or drinking. This work is in English with no visual captions or transcript and makes references to IV drug use\, mental illness\, early death\, and suicide. If you have any other questions about attending\, please contact the museum staff.

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Loss Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:AESTHETICS OF LOSS is a collection of work by seven artists who have experienced loss of family members recently. Caregiving\, memory\, helplessness\, loss and the ultimate mystery of death are explored through painting\, print- making\, fibers\, ceramics\, photography\, installation and video. Some artists utilize objects and clothing left behind by their loved ones and transform them into artworks and some use ritual and natural materials as memorial or commemorative actions of grieving and coming to terms.
