Bomba Workshop

February 25, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to collaborate with AfriCaribe in hosting a free Bomba Workshop.

Bomba is an essential expression of Puerto Rican Culture; it’s not just something you listen to, you feel it! Come learn the history, participate in the movements and experience Bomba at another level.

Bomba was brought to Puerto Rico by enslaved ancestors hundreds of years ago, most of the Island’s cultural expressions evolve from it. The music can be an upbeat holandé, which is played and danced with great enthusiasm or a yubá, which is more somber and spiritual. It was the enslaved Africans’ method of expressing themselves and, although it originated in Puerto Rico, it echoes across the Caribbean. The songs, many of which are still sung today, showcased the lamento among the sugarcane plantation workers, who bared their collective souls during gatherings.

AfriCaribe was created in 2000 by Evaristo “Tito” Rodriguez to provide Chicago with a means to celebrate the African influence in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean lands.

This is a family friendly event. Registration is required.
