DIY Tie-Dye Patterns for Shirts

In this workshop, students will create their own tie-dyed t-shirt using the traditional zā rǎn method.

Tie-Dye is a common dyeing technique that presents in many different cultures. In Asian, for example, we can see 扎染（zā rǎn）in China and Shibori in Japan. Traditional, this technique uses threads and other forms of manipulation to create patterns using natural dyes especially indigo. The patterns are meant to be even in a , emphasizing the folk art’s appreciation for the beauty of imperfection.

In this workshop, students will create their own tie-dyed t-shirt using the traditional zā rǎn method. The instructor will walk the student through each step in the process. The student will be able to choose their favorite colors and take home their new uniquely designed garment.
