Our 2023 Honorees
CULTURAL Champion
Gary T. Johnson
Gary T. Johnson was named the eighth President of the Chicago History Museum in August 2005. Mr. Johnson’s leadership focused on community outreach and building the institution’s capacity to serve its mission of sharing Chicago’s stories.
Mr. Johnson led the 2006 reinvention of the Chicago Historical Society into today’s Chicago History Museum. He also visited over 350 classrooms in neighborhoods throughout Chicago with artifacts from the museum. “My desire for Chicagoans is not only for them to access our collections and programs, but also to experience their own Chicago stories.”
As an attorney, Mr. Johnson was a leader in the civic arena, particularly in civil rights and justice reform. From 1987-1996, he was a member of the board of directors of the Legal Aid Chicago, which offers legal services to the poor.
The MOSAIC committee recognizes Mr. Johnson’s extraordinary work as an advocate for historical preservation and educator by recognizing him as this year’s Cultural Champion.
CULTURAL Investment AWARD
Choose Chicago
Each year, the Chicago Cultural Alliance (CCA) recognizes a corporate or business leader with the Cultural Investment Award at the annual MOSAIC gala. This award is presented to an organization that has supported and advocated for diverse communities in the region, with a commitment to community-based support.
This year, the CCA MOSAIC Committee has nominated Choose Chicago with this award in recognition of the recent work done to drive tourism to Chicago’s underrepresented neighborhoods. Specifically, Choose Chicago’s 2021 launch of the Neighborhood Strategy Team to invest in neighborhood tourism by providing resources and tools to community organizations from neighborhoods that are typically underserved.
Choose Chicago’s initiatives to support Chicago’s communities aligns with the CCA’s vision of a city where all communities have a voice and where cross-cultural dialogue is an integral part of Chicago’s civic fabric.
Our PERFORMERS
Center of Peruvian Arts
The Center of Peruvian Arts connects audiences and students to the Indigenous cultures of Peru through performances, educational programming, and participatory workshops. Through these practices, the organization is committed to promoting Indigenous Peruvian knowledge and wisdom, and cultivating skills in collaboration, coexistence, and social awareness. Serving the Chicagoland area, the Center of Peruvian Arts strengthens the community’s identity to their Indigenous Peruvian counterparts.
BLACK HAWK PERFORMANCE COMPANY
The Black Hawk Performance Company seeks to honor the ground they dance on, Mother Earth, and the many tribes who have made Illinois their home. Many tribes like the Ojibwe have been here for thousands of years. The most famous American Indian leader of historic times was the great Sauk Chief Black Hawk. His name comes from the great black hawks that we see all over the state. We honor both his name and our brother the hawk when we say these words. The performance company has performed for thousands of Illinois children and families since they were founded in 1984, by the incredible Zuni/Isleta singer, dancer and award winning artist, the late Carlos Peynetsa. Today his daughter, an original member of the dance company, and our ambassador, Kelly Summers carries on his legacy.
