The Monuments Project

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has just launched, the Monuments Project, a five-year, quarter-billion-dollar commitment which will support efforts to recalibrate the assumed center of our national narratives to include those who have often been denied historical recognition. This work has taken on greater urgency at a moment of national reckoning with the power and influence of memorials and commemorative spaces.

The Monuments Project will transform the way our country’s histories are told in public spaces and ensure that future generations inherit a commemorative landscape that venerates and reflects the vast, rich complexity of the American story.

Grants made under the Monuments Project will fall under the following areas of activity:

  • Fund new monuments, memorials, or historic storytelling spaces
  • Contextualize existing monuments or memorials through installations, research, and education
  • Relocate existing monuments or memorials

Broadening Narratives: GDDF New Collections Strategy

Please join the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation for the launch of GDDF’s new collections strategy: Broadening Narratives. This new strategy encourages collecting organizations to prioritize a wider sharing of diverse narratives from our two geographies: the Chicago region and the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Diverse narratives include the stories and perspectives of African Americans, Indigenous peoples, and other people of color; LGBTQ perspectives; working-class narratives; small community experiences; as well as other underrepresented perspectives in the areas of science, public health and the natural world. Q&A session will follow the presentation.

They will present information about the new strategy at this one-hour webinar on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM CDT.

Ford Foundation Supports America’s Cultural Treasures Grant

The Illinois Arts Council Agency is forwarding information to our constituents regarding an announcement made by the Ford Foundation in partnership with the Joyce, MacArthur, Terra, and Walder foundations. Yesterday an unprecedented $150 million initiative was launched to recognize “America’s Cultural Treasures,” including at least $16 million to support Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous arts organizations in Chicago that have been hard hit by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chicago funders will work together to identify grant recipients as “Chicago’s Cultural Treasures,” for the vital role they play as cultural institutions in the city. Despite their importance, these organizations have historically been under recognized and under- resourced. The funds are intended to provide general operating support and enable the organizations to be resilient and stable in the face of the unprecedented economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funders hope this initial investment will bring greater awareness to and support of Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous arts and culture organizations in Chicago.
